What if you could find like-minded people in your area to
meet-up with and wax politics?
For political active people everywhere who want to
find events in the area, meet-up spots, or a group discussion and meet new, fun
people, the Act-Up app will provide all of these options.
What is Act-Up? Act-Up is a new and exciting app marketed
specifically for politically motivated people interested in sharing ideas and
getting politically organized.
Have an event you want people to know about? Act-Up will
offer users a way to post events, meet-ups and scheduled protests to a public
calendar.
Users can also search events in their area through G P S
and a map with pinpoints indicating the location of an event. Users also have
the option to enter their ZIP code or their city and the topic they want to
meet about, and the app helps them arrange a place and time to meet.
Once an event or message is posted, users have the
opportunity to send out an update via Twitter and/or Facebook.
But is it user friendly..? Completely!
Act -Up Is…
1. Simple to
install
All you need to do is download the app onto your mobile
device and you're ready to go!
Users will then have the opportunity to create a profile and by answering a few questions – their political views, social interests and search radius – they can completely customize the updates you receive and who can contact them.

Kudos for starting something new. It may seem like a risk, but it really isn’t. You aren’t really throwing anything away. You aren’t really sending PB to Burma. On the contrary, all the work and knowledge from the first part of the semester has lead you to this point.
ReplyDeleteYour pseudonyms are impervious Winston. I only know them. Your midterm proposal is mostly a goodbye letter from PB and you don’t propose much initially for Winston, so it is difficult to know where or why you are changing gears.
What does Winston offer? You say he is lighter and wittier, but the articles on the hypocritical Arizona police chief and Rick Santorum feel pretty serious. A World of Comforting Illusions isn’t a light title either. Coming Up For Air could be. You mention webisodes and podcasts. Are these political essays attempts at finding this less serious voice?
Your writing is good. You have the occasional incomplete sentence. I’ve asked a lot in the past few weeks, and different students are ready for different questions. Your algorithm on petitions was one of the best in the class.
Your pitches, however, are only okay. So is your executive summary and presentation. The writing is well organized. You know how to focus. You say your thesis/pitch right up front. The act-up app is…
But it is all vague. The easiest thing to say is we are going to create an app. We are going to create a blog. It’s going to be great. There will be Twitter and GPS and all kinds of great greatness. Again, I’m asking a lot in seven weeks, but Monty Carlo was able to pitch three detailed game ideas faster than you can hit the buzzer.
How does the act-up app work? Through proximity and interest? Is that all? What if someone doesn’t know they are interested in Occupy? How do they learn that they are?
What does the interface look like? Don’t draw it. Tell me in words how this thing works. What is the algorithm? How does it problem solve demonstrations better than most politically motivated apps?
Myspace was doing pretty well until Zuckerberg came up with the Relationship Status. That tiny solution made for big returns.

ReplyDeleteWhen I think of music apps, there are a few brands like Shazam and Pandora that I instantly recall. They solve different problems differently. Are there political apps that you think of immediately? Is there a good petitions application? Why not? There must be some out there. Why haven’t they caught on? Why don’t I know their brand? Why do their algorithms fail?
Are demonstrations themselves too scattered today? Too many chefs in the kitchen? Maybe that is the problem to solve first.
Buzzertooth is a phone app that turns any classroom, office or bar into a game show. One phone becomes the host; everyone else becomes a buzzer. That’s Monty. That is specific to the point I want one. That is a pitch. That tells me exactly what problem is being solved by the solution.
You tell me your app development will take 5-7 days – days? – and you don’t know what you are solving for yet.
How about act-up being a reverse game show? Find The Host. Find the Leader. It pits different causes against one another. The winning solutions to social and political problems garner the most demonstrators. Demonstrations are organized around the strongest solutions. If you are vague or have too many issues crowding your platform, then you lose.
Call it Platform. Call it Soapbox. Call it Actup.
The interfaces have been made as simple as possible to navigate. The functions and elements have a clear purpose. Labels have been put next to icons to make it easy to recognize them instantly.
That doesn’t say anything. That’s a wish.
Yes, you Winston know how to organize your proposal. You can clearly write it. You can hype it. But the most important part of the writing is the idea or ideas. They solve for everything else. Once you know exactly what you need to accomplish, figuring it’s going to take Joe and Larry Kerfuffle 3.87566 months at $35.24 an hour plus Saturdays worked, plus overtime, plus severance… is cake. Hiring Joe and Larry is cake. Paying Joe and Larry is pretty much cake, if you have the right concept.
Writing a pitch that stops me in my tracks is not cake.
I’m glad you took the opportunity to rewrite, but you’ve got amorphous political apps, dreams of light and witty objective journalism podcasts, and some left leaning op-eds. Winston, you lost me.
